Steps to Success
Designing over 400 successful projects for these brands are a testament to Jarmel Kizel’s careful application of sound planning, design, and construction principles to each and every project that passes through our doors.
And yet it was not always like this for us. Our story takes a much more special meaning when we remember the long road that led us here.
How Today Came to Be
Jarmel Kimel Architects & Engineers, Inc. was originally founded in 1975 by Marvin Jarmel. Out of the basement of his Livingston, NJ home, as ISS Interior Space Specialists, Inc. he ran a dynamic practice designing interior spaces for commercial clients. Owing to his diligence and skill, Interior Space Specialists grew steadily through the ’80s.
A big change happened in the ’90s as Marvin’s sons, Matthew, an architect and Richard an engineer respectively, joined the firm. Irwin Kizel, an architect and planner, also joined within the same span of time. Together, they began to expand the firm’s services and reach out to other markets, including industrial, retail, multifamily, educational, government and—of course—childcare and education.
By 2006, the firm had grown from offering interior design to a complete, one-stop architectural and engineering service with the ability to design all building systems. The firm’s new name, Jarmel Kizel Architects & Engineers, Inc., encapsulated the diversity of the team’s services—but they were not done yet.
Starting in 2007, Jarmel Kizel has been helping clients and developers with their Land Planning and Entitlement strategies, quickly becoming the go-to real estate consultants in the Northeast when it comes to zoning and land use issues.
Today, we at Jarmel Kizel apply our collective skill and expertise in construction, land entitlement, and real estate development to help clients with their rollout strategies. Our portfolio of satisfied clients—including 400 in the childcare space—testify to our dedication to our work.
Our Impact
Jarmel Kizel’s long history of expertise in various markets has left lasting, positive impacts on our clients’ businesses and the communities they serve. The diversity of our services, all interrelated and focused on a common goal, results in buildings, developments, and interiors that are at once beautiful, functional, sustainable and designed with economic appropriateness.
Working with us, clients can uncover and avoid costly errors in procuring property for development. They also benefit from our deep understanding and appreciation of zoning regulations and environmental laws, arming themselves with strategies to win planning and zoning boards over.
We also cannot overstate the importance of the impact our client’s developments will have on their local communities. We put our nearly 50 years of experience into uncovering a community’s most urgent needs, then tweaking our clients’ projects to meet those needs and more. Time and again, we’ve seen these little adjustments change the minds of town councils and planning boards, who approve our clients’ projects after previously objecting to them.
Today, a sizeable portion of our work is with franchise operators, who need not only top-level design work but also an efficient rollout strategy. We have successfully completed hundreds of childcare, retail, fitness centers, restaurants, and office space projects—many for franchise operators who value fast, repetitive, and top-quality work every single time.
Our Future
Our impact on the childcare industry has been profound, and our work has helped our clients grow and expand, providing quality care for tens of thousands of children. We only intend to continue this trend over the next 50 years, enabling more clients to build childcare facilities where they’re needed the most.
And yet that’s not all. We will likewise continue to reach out to newer markets as well, bringing our decades of experience to the table as we explore new problems and create new solutions.
We’ll certainly continue our work in land entitlement, as it’s a complex and constantly evolving area in real estate. Over the years, our proper due diligence has saved our clients from incurring millions of dollars in unnecessary legal and redesign costs.
